“The Bush Dance for Bushwalkers” was organised by John Short on Monday 18th March 2019 as a tribute to Herb Lippmann, as a special event at the regular Monday night BMC Dance Workshops at Pennant Hills.
The event was held close to Herb’s birthday, St Patrick’s day.
Some excellent dances were well taught and danced that night. They included The Waves of Tory, The Black Wattle Reel, The Wombat Polka & The Manchester Gallop and of course, The Red Socks Reel.
Invited to the dance were many of Herb’s family members and many members of the Bush Walking Club that Herb started in January 2000, called the Up & Downers Bushwalking Club.
Herb would always have just completed a long or hard bushwalk when Jenny and I first met him at Beecroft dances back in the 80’s.
He was so enthusiastic about his walking that day. As bush walkers ourselves, we could not match his energy to walk all day then dance all night!
The Red Socks Reel was the feature dance for our 18th March dance. John short wrote it in Herb’s honour after his death in 2003.
This name of this dance related to the fact that Herb always wore Red socks.
Many that attended the dance on 18th March wore red socks in his honour. It looked fantastic.
In
attendance were 22 regulars from the Monday night dance group and the
BMC more broadly, 10 people from the Up & Downers Bush walking Club
and 10 members of Herb’s extended families.
It was great that we could all enjoy this night together.
Many thanks to John Short for all his hard work and effort as well as his great skill in putting it together and teaching so many beginners the fun of bush dancing.
Jenny and I are also current members of the Up & Downers so it was my pleasure in communicating this great event to them and Herb’s family.

Mike (Waters) mentioned Herbie came out bush walking in RNP along the track from Heathcote to Waterfall, disappearing many times to re-emerge further ahead. They tried to get the RNP rangers to map n re-establish the track for the public. But without success. Much of the area became sign posted 'for protection'. Easy way not to maintain it, eh...
When trying to establish a Blacktown Bush Dance, Herbie was always an early n enthusiastic starter. Just didn't seem to be enough local interest for it to really take off.
Herbie n the girl's were frequent starters (and stayers) at the BMC dances n Heritage Balls.
From my recollections, Herbie always enjoyed his bush dancing, bush walking n time with his family.
My first recollection was at the Second Saturday at Sutherland bush dance in mid 1990's. He was there with the two girls, negotiating a 'discount' entry fee at the door ..
Such a funny exchange; based around his group being 1 adult n 2 kids, as a reduced family number. Therefore warranting a reduced fee. Even funnier when I realised that this was a regular monthly event... After travelling all that way, they all had a fantastic time; not missing any of the dances. I think it was Herbie n partner who'd crouch in the middle as the dancing couple returned to the top in the Virginia Reel. A 'fun' manoeuvre in the dance.
He n Yu Hua were members of our group in 2002/3.
Both enjoyed the trip out to the 'Shire' because of the fun time that followed; the dancing and the yarn over a cuppa, with more dancing to follow>
They were so excited telling us about the up-coming trip. Such a shock when we read/ heard about the bus accident n that Herbie n Yu Hua were involved.
I had a piccie or two of Herb n Natalie which I recall giving to Nat at the funeral.
When I heard that, as they tossed the ashes from Kanangra Boyd Wall, a gust of wind blew them up into the air n onto the walkers n into the creek, I thort, Yep, Herbie's last hug before he goes off meandering through the forest...
Pleasant memories....
