Don and Sue Brian with Pete and Sue McMahon present THE CONVICT VOICE, a musical and pictorial production.
The clanking of chain and the moans on the triangles were not the only sound tracks to the life of convicts. Poetry, song, theatre and dance music provided an often unrecognised layer to their aural experience.
Through their research on the convict settlements on Norfolk Island, ReCollected, Don and Sue Brian, came to realize that, although conditions were at times severe, the historical presentation this brutality has overshadowed much of the social history of convict settlements and the voice of the convicts.
Don and Sue trawled historical diaries, journals and newspapers, unearthing six previously unrecorded songs and poems written by Norfolk Island convicts during the colonial settlements (1788-1856). These present new perspectives on our colonial history.
With the instrumental and technical support of Sue and Pete McMahon, Don has produced a unique CD of these songs also including some less commonly known songs from, and about, the New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land convict eras.

Duke's Place, named after our honoured early member Harold 'Duke' Tritton (1886-1965), is the place to go once a month for a great night of Australian songs in concert and session. Duke was a powerful singer who supplied BMC with many songs he had learnt in his younger days while working as a shearer and at other bush jobs. He was also a songwriter and poet giving us songs that have entered the tradition such as Sandy Hollow Line and Shearing in the Bar.
